Resort Room Requests That Actually Work at Disney World

You’ve booked a Disney resort, poured over building maps, and now you want that room – the one a short walk from the bus stop, high enough to catch the fireworks. Here’s the honest version of how room requests work at Disney World in 2026: what you can actually ask for, why almost nothing is promised, and the smart requests that genuinely improve your odds. Get this right and you save yourself a lot of walking; get your expectations right and you save yourself the disappointment.

Requests vs guarantees: the one thing to understand first

Disney splits what you want into two very different buckets, and confusing them is the single biggest reason people feel let down.

Guaranteed means you paid for it, or you medically need it. If you book a water-view or theme-park-view room, that view is contractually part of the booking. If you book a Preferred location, a king bed, or a fifth-sleeper room, that’s a paid category and you’ll get it. Genuine accessibility needs – a roll-in shower, a hearing-accessible room – are also honoured as requirements, not preferences.

Everything else is a preference. “Near the bus stop”, “upper floor”, “close to the pool” – Cast Members will try, but it depends entirely on what’s free the moment your room is assigned. Disney almost never gives you a paid category for free, so if a specific building or view really matters, book that category rather than hoping a request delivers it.

How to make a request in 2026

The modern way is online check-in in the My Disney Experience app, which opens 60 days before arrival. Open the menu, go to your hotel reservation, and start check-in. You’ll be offered a short list of location preferences – typically you can pick up to two. Options vary by resort but often include near transport, near the lobby, upper or lower floor, near a lift, and near the pool. Since mid-2026 some resorts also let you flag a specific building, floor, or a king bed within the same flow.

If you’re already setting up the app for your trip, our guide to setting up My Disney Experience before you fly walks through linking your reservation so check-in is ready to go.

One honest wrinkle: online check-in is built for speed. It tells Disney you want the first suitable room so you can get in fast, which can quietly override a fussy request. If a single specific request is your top priority, it’s often better to skip online check-in and ask at the front desk on arrival – the team there has more flexibility to match you. For most families, online check-in plus one or two simple preferences is the right balance.

Keep it to one or two requests

The more boxes you tick, the harder your room is to find – and the likelier the whole lot gets dropped in favour of whatever’s ready. Decide what actually matters most to you:

  • Tired legs or little ones? Request near transport or near the lobby over a view.
  • Light sleepers? An upper floor away from the pool and food courts is quieter.
  • Want fireworks from your balcony? A high floor at a tower resort near Magic Kingdom or EPCOT gives you the best shot – though it’s never certain.
  • Mobility needs? A ground floor or near-lift request carries real weight when it’s a genuine requirement.

The best requests by resort type

Sprawling resorts reward a bit of homework. Here’s where the real time-savings sit.

Resort typeWhat to requestWhy
Value (Pop Century, All-Stars)Near transport / near the main hallThese resorts are huge; the wrong building is a long march to the food court and buses. Preferred rooms are a paid category near the lobby.
Moderate (Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans)Near your transport hubAt Caribbean Beach the Jamaica section is closest to the Skyliner main hub, Aruba sits between two Skyliner stations. Port Orleans is spread along the river, so “near a bus stop” matters.
Deluxe & DVC (Animal Kingdom Lodge, the villas)Room closer to the lobby / liftsLong internal corridors mean the far end can be a five-minute walk to dining and lifts. Closer-to-lobby rooms are the most-requested for a reason.
Fort Wilderness (camping)A specific loop or campsiteSites vary hugely – shade, bathroom proximity, and room to reverse a camper. Research the loop map and name your preference.

Skyliner and monorail resorts are worth understanding before you even pick a building – our breakdown of monorail resorts vs Skyliner resorts covers which location genuinely wins for reaching the parks. And if you’re still choosing where to stay, the best resorts for families with young kids weighs up the options, and it is worth checking rates for your dates before you commit.

Connecting rooms are a special case

If you’re travelling as a bigger group and want two rooms with a connecting door, don’t rely on the online check-in list. Book the two rooms – usually the same room type, since it’s harder to connect a standard room to a preferred one – then phone Disney Resort Hotel Reservations to add a connecting-rooms note to both bookings, and reference each other’s confirmation numbers.

Even then it’s a request, with one exception: connecting rooms are only guaranteed when your party genuinely exceeds a single room’s maximum occupancy and there are no more than two adults on the reservation – so a family that can’t legally fit in one room has a real claim. If you simply want two adult couples side by side, treat it as a hopeful preference and consider a two-bedroom villa instead, where the extra space is guaranteed by the booking.

On arrival day: how it plays out

If you’ve done online check-in, your room being ready triggers a push notification, text and email with your room number, floor, building and theme, plus a link to a resort map. Standard ready time is around 3pm (4pm for Deluxe Villas), though rooms often open earlier when the resort isn’t full. A few things that genuinely help:

  • Set a realistic arrival time in the app – an honest early time can nudge you up the queue, but never guarantees an early room.
  • Turn on push notifications so you don’t miss the room-ready alert while you’re at a park.
  • Arrive, drop bags with Bell Services, and go enjoy the day – your phone or MagicBand unlocks the door when it’s ready, no front-desk queue needed.

If your request didn’t land and it truly matters, a polite word at the front desk on arrival is your best move – not a complaint, just “is there any chance of a room nearer the buses?” Cast Members can sometimes shuffle things, especially early in the day before the resort fills.

What’s honestly not worth stressing over

Chasing a specific room number by faxing or emailing the resort – once a popular tactic – is largely a thing of the past; Disney funnels requests through online check-in now and detailed emails carry little extra weight. Stacking four or five requests doesn’t help either; it just makes you harder to place. And a free upgrade to a paid view or Preferred building through a request alone almost never happens.

The winning mindset: pay for what you can’t live without, request one or two things that genuinely improve your stay, and stay relaxed about the rest. A resort’s theming, pool and transport links matter far more to your holiday than which specific door you’re behind – and if theming is your thing, our pick of the most immersively themed resorts is a better use of your planning energy. Use the app to track your resort’s transport and live wait times, and the room becomes just the comfortable place you crash at the end of a brilliant day.

Frequently asked

Are Disney World room requests guaranteed?

No. Apart from medical or accessibility needs and room categories you’ve paid for (like a water view or Preferred location), everything is a preference. Cast Members try to honour requests, but it depends on what’s free when your room is assigned.

How many room requests can I make at online check-in?

Usually two location preferences per booking, chosen from a short list that varies by resort – things like near transport, upper floor, or near a lift. Keep it to your top one or two so it’s easier to match.

Does online check-in help or hurt my room request?

It’s the standard way Disney wants requests now, and it’s convenient. But it also signals you want the first available room quickly, so a very specific request can sometimes be honoured better by checking in at the front desk.

How do I request connecting rooms at Disney World?

Book the two rooms, then phone Disney Resort Hotel Reservations to add a connecting-rooms note. Connecting doors are only guaranteed when your party genuinely exceeds one room’s occupancy with no more than two adults per room.
