Universal Orlando Closures and Refurbishments to Check Before You Book (2026)

Universal Orlando Closures and Refurbishments to Check Before You Book (2026)

Universal’s own closure list carried ten rows when we read it on 1 October 2026, and the biggest is a whole park. Here is every Universal Orlando closure date that could change a 2026 or 2027 booking, including the two it no longer mentions at all.

The biggest Universal Orlando closure of the next year is not a ride, it is a park. Volcano Bay shuts completely after 25 October 2026, and Universal’s own wording for the reopening is “on or before April 1, 2027”. If your trip falls between those dates, one of the four gates you may be budgeting for will not open at all.

Below is every Universal Orlando closure and refurbishment with a date attached, read from Universal’s own park hours page on 1 October 2026 and matched against our Universal and Disney ride catalogue. Ten rows are on that list today. Several of them will quietly change a booking decision rather than just a park day.

Volcano Bay closes for the winter, and the reopening is a ceiling

The last day the park opens is 25 October 2026. From the 26th it is shut, which takes all eighteen Volcano Bay attractions in our catalogue out of the resort in one go, from Krakatau Aqua Coaster down to the Tot Tiki Reef toddler area.

Read Universal’s wording carefully, because it is doing something specific. The reopening is given as on or before 1 April 2027. That is a ceiling, not an opening date. It does not promise the park opens on 1 April and it does not rule out the park opening sooner. Any tracker printing 1 April 2027 as the reopening, including the date on our own Volcano Bay page, is rounding a hedge into a fact.

There is a second oddity and it is Universal’s, not ours. The closure is announced in a trailing paragraph underneath the list rather than in the list. Volcano Bay’s own section of that same list says there is nothing closed at the park. Both statements have sat on the page together, one directly above the other, in every version we have read going back to 8 June 2026, and in both the American and British editions. A reader who scanned the bullets and stopped would conclude the park was fine.

The practical consequence is about tickets rather than plans. Several Universal multi-day tickets bundle Volcano Bay admission, and for dates from 26 October onwards that bundle buys you nothing. Check what is actually included before you pay for it, and price the water park inclusive options against the park only ones when you compare Universal Orlando tickets. If you are travelling before 26 October the opposite applies, because that is the last window for roughly five months.

The Hogwarts Express closes on 4 November, and that is a ticket decision

Universal lists the Hogwarts Express as closed from 4 November 2026 at both ends, so 3 November is the last day to ride it. No reopening date has been published for either station.

We hold it as two separate entries because that is how you ride it. You queue at King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios Florida and at Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure, and the journey plays differently depending which way you are going, which is why it is worth doing twice. Both go down together.

Here is why it affects what you buy. Universal requires a park to park ticket to ride the train, because it runs between the two parks, and for plenty of families the train is the reason they upgrade in the first place. With it down, the park to park premium buys you the ability to move between parks on the same day and nothing else. If your dates land after 3 November, price a park to park ticket against a base ticket on its own merits rather than treating the upgrade as automatic.

Two things Universal’s closure list will not tell you

It deletes a ride the moment it is gone for good. Two headline Universal Studios Florida attractions have closed permanently and neither appears anywhere on the closures list. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit ran for the last time on 17 August 2025 after sixteen years, and Fast & Furious – Supercharged on 16 August 2026 after eight. Universal did announce Supercharged, in a trailing paragraph on that same page, which was still there in the versions dated 16 and 27 July 2026. By the revision dated 13 August the paragraph had gone, three days before the ride’s own last day, and so had every trace of it. The list tells you what is going. It does not tell you what has already gone.

It also deletes short closures once they end, so it is a snapshot and not a calendar. Four things appeared on the list during 2026 and have since vanished from it: Pteranodon Flyers, MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack, Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp and the Epic Universe show The Untrainable Dragon. The notice period varies wildly. The Untrainable Dragon’s six day September closure was on the list by mid July, two months ahead. MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack’s sixteen day June closure was still being listed a week after it had already started. Short closures are the one category you cannot plan around.

Po Live! is the clearest illustration. It was listed as closed from 18 May to 3 July 2026, came back, and is now on the list again as closed from 3 October with no return date. The same show, twice in one year, which is not something a single reading of the page would ever show you.

What comes back, and when

Jurassic Park River Adventure is the long one. It has been shut since 5 January 2026 and Universal lists it back on 20 November 2026, which is ten and a half months and the longest closure on the list with a published end date. It opened in 1999. Unless you got there in the first four days of January, you did not ride it in 2026.

Three seasonal things return on 14 November 2026 and run to 3 January 2027: The Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular at Islands of Adventure, Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s at Universal Studios Florida, and the Earl the Squirrel Meet & Greet. These are seasonal rather than refurbishments, but the effect on a park day is identical. Outside that window Seuss Landing carries no show at all.

Two returns have no date whatsoever. Finnegan’s Bar and Grill has been shut since 12 January 2026, Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show since 12 May 2026, and both are listed as coming back in Winter 2026. That is a season, not a date, and the Make-Up Show had run since Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990. We are not going to turn either into a date, because Universal has not.

Epic Universe has one closure on the entire list

One row: Fyre Drill, out for eleven days from 25 January 2027. Everything else at Epic Universe is listed as running, which makes the newest park the easiest of the four to plan around at the moment. Fyre Drill is also the smallest loss on the list, a water cannon boat ride on the Isle of Berk with no minimum height.

Hotels are quiet too. No room refurbishment is recorded at any of the eleven Universal Orlando on site hotels, and none of them is closing. The one hotel-side consequence is the walking path to Volcano Bay, which Loews says is unavailable at Sapphire Falls and Aventura while the park is shut. That is a real contrast with Disney World, where phased guest room works run across several resorts at once and can sit under your own window for months.

When to check again

Universal revised that closures list thirteen times between 8 June and 29 September 2026. Three of the entries in the table above were added to it after 13 August: Po Live!, the Hogwarts Express at both stations, and the permanent closure of Animal Actors on Location!, a show whose final performance is now about a month away. Freshness matters more than completeness here.

  • At booking. Whole park and multi month closures are published a long way out. Volcano Bay’s October closure has been on the page since at least 8 June 2026, which is early enough to have moved a trip.
  • At sixty days. This is when the short refurbishments inside your own dates start to surface.
  • The week before, then every morning. Rides also go down same day for weather and faults, and no published list carries that, which is what our live wait times board is for. Ride the things you care about first, because a ride that is up at opening can be down by lunch.

The short version

  • Volcano Bay: last day 25 October 2026, reopening a ceiling of 1 April 2027 rather than a date.
  • Hogwarts Express: last ride 3 November 2026, both stations, no return date.
  • Animal Actors on Location!: last performance 2 November 2026, gone for good.
  • Po Live!: last performance 2 October 2026, no return date.
  • Jurassic Park River Adventure: back 20 November 2026 after ten and a half months.
  • January and February 2027: Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is out for a month, 4 January to 2 February, Fyre Drill for eleven days and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey for twelve. Bilge-Rat Barges and Fyre Drill are both down for nine days of that, 25 January to 2 February.
  • Finnegan’s Bar and Grill and Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show: a season, not a date.

Nothing on this list is a reason not to go. Volcano Bay is the only one big enough to move a trip, and it moves it by a fortnight at most if you are travelling in late October. The rest is worth twenty minutes before you buy tickets, so that the one ride your eleven year old has been talking about for a year is not behind a wall on the day you turn up.
