Universal Orlando sets two height rules on every ride, and most families only plan for one. The minimum decides whether a child can get on at all. The second decides whether they can get on alone, and it is the same number everywhere in the resort: 48 inches, or 122cm. Below that line a child needs what Universal calls a Supervising Companion, and the companion has to ride too.
We hold a companion rule on 43 of the 76 Universal attractions in our catalogue. Below is the whole set, the six bands it comes in, the thirteen attractions that catch families out because they have no minimum at all, and the three rules Universal leaves out of its own charts.
What Universal actually requires
The wording is identical in all three of Universal’s safety and accessibility guides. A child who meets a ride’s minimum height but not the 48 inch ride-alone height must be accompanied by a Supervising Companion, which Universal defines as someone aged 14 or over who also meets every other ridership requirement for that attraction.
Two things follow, and both change who goes on what. A 14 year old sibling counts, so two adults and a teenager give you three possible companions rather than two. And because the companion must meet the ride’s other requirements, whoever rides with a 41 inch child on a 40 inch ride has to clear 40 inches themselves. Universal does not say whether a companion must also be over 48 inches, so if your 14 year old is short, ask at the entrance rather than assume.
Universal also publishes no limit on how many under-48 children one companion may take, so we are not going to invent one. In practice the limit is the vehicle, not the rule.
Six bands, and nothing in between
Across all four parks the companion rule takes exactly six shapes.
| Companion required for children | Attractions | Minimum height on those rides |
|---|---|---|
| Under 48 inches | 13 | No minimum published |
| 40 to 48 inches | 11 | 40 inches |
| 42 to 48 inches | 10 | 42 inches |
| 36 to 48 inches | 6 | 36 inches |
| 34 to 48 inches | 2 | 34 inches |
| 44 to 48 inches | 1 | 44 inches |
The band always ends at 48. The only thing that moves is where it starts, and that is simply the ride’s own minimum, so five of the six rows tell you nothing the minimum plus 48 would not. The first row is the exception, and it is the one that costs families a queue.
Thirteen attractions with no minimum that still need an adult
These thirteen publish no minimum height at all. Anyone may ride at any height, which is exactly why a parent assumes a six year old can go on with an older cousin while the adults wait outside. They cannot, unless the cousin is 14.
Four of the thirteen are not rides in any normal sense. Astronomica and Viking Training Camp at Epic Universe and Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres at Universal Studios Florida are children’s play areas, and Kopiko Wai Winding River is a lazy river. At Kopiko Wai the wording is that the child must be accompanied in the river, so the companion is getting in; for the three play areas Universal says only that a companion is required. Both Hogwarts Express stations are on the list as well, which catches people: it is a train, and it still needs an adult.
Three rules that appear in no height chart
Each Universal safety guide ends with a consolidated height requirements chart, and that chart is the page people photograph. Between them the three charts, one covering Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, one Epic Universe and one Volcano Bay, carry 40 of the 43 companion rules.
The missing three are Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres, Astronomica and Viking Training Camp. All three are children’s play areas, all three require a companion under 48 inches, and in all three cases the rule sits only on the attraction’s own page several pages before the chart. Plan from the chart and you miss all three, and they are the three most likely to have a four year old in them.
Every Universal attraction that needs a companion
Forty two attractions, grouped by park and ordered by minimum height. Fast & Furious Supercharged carried a 40 to 48 inch band and closed for good after 16 August 2026, so it is not listed, although it is still printed in Universal’s own riders guide and in the resort’s sensory guide.
From our own catalogue, parsed from Universal Orlando’s published safety and accessibility guides.
By park, Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida each gate 13 attractions, Epic Universe gates 10 of its 15, and Volcano Bay gates 7 of its 18. Epic Universe is the heaviest hit as a share, which is worth knowing before you buy Universal Orlando tickets for a party with one small child and one adult.
Where the rule runs the other way
Pteranodon Flyers at Islands of Adventure is the only Universal ride that turns the rule around. Universal’s table gives it a range of 36 to 56 inches and a companion band of 36 to 48, then adds a line that inverts the whole thing: guests over 56 inches must be accompanied by a guest who meets the 36 to 56 inch requirement. A tall adult cannot ride it alone. Volcano Bay caps height in two more places, 54 inches at Runamukka Reef and 48 inches at Tot Tiki Reef, but both are children’s play areas.
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem works differently again. Its band is 40 to 48 inches, but a child under 40 is not turned away, they are moved to the stationary seating.
And Punga Racers at Volcano Bay is the single Universal attraction with a minimum under 48 inches and no companion rule attached. Every other 42 inch slide there needs an adult alongside. Universal describes Punga Racers as four individual body slides, ridden one at a time, and asks for nobody.
Eighteen attractions where a child cannot sit on your lap
Eighteen attractions carry an explicit no lap sitting line in Universal’s guides, and fifteen of the eighteen also carry a companion band. Five rule out hand held infants as well: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Storm Force Accelatron, Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl, Constellation Carousel and Fyre Drill. The rest are The Cat in the Hat, Skull Island: Reign of Kong, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, Yoshi’s Adventure, the now closed Fast & Furious Supercharged, and eight at Volcano Bay: Krakatau Aqua Coaster, Taniwha Tubes, Maku and Puihi of Maku Puihi Round Raft Rides, Honu and ika Moana of Honu ika Moana, Runamukka Reef and Tot Tiki Reef. The three without a companion band are Honu, Runamukka Reef and Tot Tiki Reef.
That matters for seat arithmetic. One adult who has to take two small children one at a time is not one party, it is two cycles of the queue.
Volcano Bay uses the same number for life jackets
The 48 inch line does a second job at Volcano Bay. Four locations require children under 48 inches to wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket: Kopiko Wai Winding River, Puka Uli Lagoon, The Reef and Waturi Beach. TeAwa The Fearless River goes further and asks every guest to wear one, whatever their height. Kopiko Wai and TeAwa are the two of the five that also require a companion in the water.
Universal’s own documents do not agree here. Both state the vest requirement at all five locations, but the resort’s sensory guide specifies a Type 3 jacket at Kopiko Wai and TeAwa where the safety guide says only Coast Guard approved. The sharper disagreement is the companion column: the sensory guide marks a supervising companion as required at Puka Uli Lagoon, The Reef and Waturi Beach, and at the Runamukka Reef and Tot Tiki Reef play areas, where the Volcano Bay safety guide requires none. Plan for the vest at all five, and expect to be asked to go in with a small child at the pools.
Dated note for 2026 trips: Volcano Bay begins a maintenance closure on 26 October 2026, and Universal’s park hours page gives the reopening as “on or before April 1, 2027”.
Before you fly
- Measure at home, in the shoes they will wear, with a tape measure rather than by eye. Universal measures at the ride, and if the greeter is unsure they ask the supervising companion to come to the height marker and help.
- Universal’s own advice is to check heights at each park entrance, where a list of attractions and requirements is posted, rather than find out in the first queue.
- Work out companions per ride, not per day. Take a child at 41 inches: they need a companion on 31 of the attractions we hold, and are too short for 25 others, 13 of which are rides with a minimum of 48 inches or more.
- Child Swap solves the opposite problem, where a child is too small or unwilling and one adult waits with them before taking their turn. It is not a substitute for a companion on a ride the child is tall enough for.
Closures that change this list
- Hogwarts Express closes at both stations from 4 November 2026, with no return date announced. Both are under 48 inch companion attractions.
- Jurassic Park River Adventure, a 42 to 48 inch ride, has been shut since 5 January 2026 and Universal lists it as reopening on 20 November 2026.
- Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges closes 4 January to 2 February 2027, and Fyre Drill 25 January to 4 February 2027.
- Volcano Bay shuts entirely from 26 October 2026, which takes seven companion attractions off the board for the winter.
Universal revises these documents without announcing it. Check the marker at the attraction on the day, and treat any figure here as a planning number rather than the last word at the turnstile.
